A minimum of 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.

The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
