Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such drugs need to be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
